Denise LaShawn Reed, a Dublin woman operating under multiple aliases, was arrested Monday morning on charges related to a false tax refund scheme, U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag and IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Jose M. Martinez said.
Also known as Brooke Nicholson, Lauren Roberts, Denise Berry, Savana Jones and Neyce Roberts, Reed allegedly presented claims to the IRS for tax refunds that she knew to be false, fictitious and fraudulent between January 2009 and February 2010. Reed made the claims by preparing and presenting individual income returns in the names of other individuals and was charged with 14 counts of filing false claims for refunds totaling $97,002.
Reed and was released on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 14.
Under a new directive effective Oct. 2012, the Justice Department's Tax Division will respond "quickly and effectively to the challenges in stolen identity refund fraud" cases. The maximum penalty for each count of filing false claims is five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition?
