Safeway will add a three-bay, nine-pump self-service discount gasoline station to its new Lifestyle supermarket in Pleasanton.
The station will occupy the vacant space in front of the new Wells Fargo Bank just north of the store on Bernal Avenue next to the northbound I-680 exit. The bank, which will celebrate its grand opening tomorrow, is accessible from the west side of its two-story building where its front doors will now look out onto the gas station operation.
The Pleasanton Planning Commission approved Safeway's request to add the fuel station at its expanding Pleasanton Gateway Center grocery, retail and financial complex in a 5-0 unanimous vote. Its only condition was that Safeway agree to have at least two attendants on duty at all times.
The station will have the same hours as the supermarket 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A small operations building will house the station cashier and sell small items, such as candy, but will not be a mini-mart, Safeway officials told the commission Wednesday night.
Three sets of three fueling pumps will line each of three bays, with dual hoses to accommodate 18 vehicles at a time. The pumps will office low and high octane gasoline and diesel fuel.
Two underground fuel storage tanks will each hold 30,000 gallons of fuel, with one for low-octane gasoline and the second divided into three compartments to hold mid- and high-octane gasoline and diesel fuel. Suppliers will make an estimated three deliveries a day over a 24-hour period seven days a week.
Safeway has not said when construction will begin on the new gas station. It also operates discount fuel stations next to its stores in Dublin and Livermore. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
